In 1870 the Methodist Episcopal Church established Genesee College in Lima, New York, however there was a change of location because Lima was too secluded and that is when Syracuse University opened in the more populated city of Syracuse, New York. In 1871 Syracuse University had just 41 students enrolled. In 1890, the school adopted the color orange as one of the school’s colors because thus far no other school had used orange as their color and their current colors were an unpopular pink and blue. The blue stayed and the new school colors were Orange and Blue. Syracuse has many traditions, one is that of the legacy of #44, since 1954, three out of the nine players who have won the #44 have received All American honors. An interesting aspect of Syracuse athletics is their indecisiveness about their mascot. It all started in 1931, the mascot was b\named by a newspaper, the Saltine Warrior, and\ Indian figure named, Big Chief Bill Orange. The mascot was protested in 1978 by a Native American student organization. The mascot then went on to be a Roman style gladiator, which did not last long, among other mascots. Finally, in 1995 Otto, The Orange, a large, round, fuzzy orange officially became the mascot. Syracuse has a long, outstanding history and if you are looking for the perfect college gift for any Syracuse fan or student look no further.
