This breed has been popular throughout history as it was a breed adopted by 16th century European Courts and became extremely popular in the Victorian Era. Pugs became the official dog of the House of Orange in Holland and were a pet of royalty in several countries. The Pug was a famous dog for William, Prince of Orange and Napoleon. The American Kennel Club recognized Pugs in 1885 and has been a popular companion dog in America ever since. Pugs are best at being watchdogs and performing tricks.
