The Vietnam War was fought between the communist forces of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and the National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam and their allies the Republic of China and the Soviet Union against the anti-communist forces if the Republic of Vietnam and its allies, most notably the United States.  The war was fought in order to unify Vietnam into a single country.  The Vietnam War consisted of guerilla attacks on cities and villages in Southeast Asia also; large-scale conventional battles, aerial bombings and chemical warfare all played a large part in the war.  The Vietnam War lasted from 1959 until 1975.  The war ended with a peace treaty in 1973 that provided the United States disengagement.  In the end the Vietnam War was a political defeat for the United States and a military victory for the Democratic Republic of Vietnam over the Republic of Vietnam.  Finally the reunification of Vietnam was the end result.
