The expedition of Lewis and Clark also known as the Corps of Discovery was the 1st overland journey to the Pacific Coast and back. Captain Meriwether Lewis and Second Lieutenant William Clark of the United States army led the expedition and a small army of men accompanied them. President Thomas Jefferson initiated the expedition just after the Louisiana Purchase when interest in the west coast began. The stipend of $2, 500 was given to Lewis and Clark by President Thomas Jefferson and the United States government to explore the west. Lewis and Clark were required to study the terrain, wildlife, plant life and the Indian tribes of the west. In the end extensive knowledge of the west was gained. There was an awareness of major bodies of water and mountain ranges that helped to map the land.
