The Irish Setter has a silky, wavy and long coat that is chestnut or mahogany in color, sometimes they have white makings on their chest and feet. Irish Setters have an unbelievable amount of energy. Irish Setters can be difficult to train and they take time, patience and someone who can be a firm handler. This breed is good with other animals in the house when properly trained or when raised with them as a pup. When on the hunt, this breed will find game by using their excellent sense of smell and by running fast back and forth in front of the hunter. Originally the Irish Setter was called the Red Setter. Irish Setters are an ancestor of the Spanish Pointer and they were developed when a mix of spaniels, setters and pointers were crossed. This breed also makes good show dogs because of their handsome looks and they also make a great family and companion dog. Irish Setter talents include hunting, tracking, retrieving, pointing, watchdogging, agility and competitive obedience.
