The Great Pyrenees is also known as the Pyrenean Mountain Dog, which is a very large breed that has a solid and muscular body. Their coats have wavy and long hair and the color is either solid white or white with patches of tan, wolf-gray or pale yellow. Many say that the Great Pyrenees mostly resembles a brown bear, except for its coloring. Their coat is so thick it is weather resistant and they are able to live outdoors all year, except in climates where it is too hot. The Great Pyrenees breed makes an excellent guard dog and they are very loyal to their families and wary of strangers. They are also an exceptional guard of livestock. Sometimes if the proper training is not accomplished at an early age, they can be dominant and independent of their owner. They need a lot of space and regular outdoor exercise and they definitely prefer the cooler climates because of their thick coat. The Great Pyrenees is a cross between a Hungarian Kuvasz and Maremmano-Abruzzese and it is a relative of the St. Bernard and Newfoundland. Traces of this breed have dated back to 1800 BC, but became popular in France by nobleman. Throughout history and into the present they have been sledding dogs, cart pullers and avalanche rescue dogs; they are truly born to live in the mountains.
