The Battle of Gettysburg took place during the American Civil War and it is considered the turning point of the American Civil War and the bloodiest battle where there were some 50,000 casualties over the 3-day battle. Lasting from July 1st through the 3rd in 1863 it was fought in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania between the Union Major General George G Meade’s army of the Potomac and the Confederate General Robert E Lee’s army of Northern Virginia. The Battle of Gettysburg ended General Lee’s invasion of the north. The Confederates lost the American Civil War both politically and militarily. It was still evident that a battle took place at Gettysburg over four months after the battle occurred. The Soldier’s National Cemetery was dedicated in November and President Abraham Lincoln headed the ceremony. Today the sight of the Battle of Gettysburg is maintained as one of the nations most significant and honored historical landmarks. At Gettysburg today there are also daily reenactments of the battle that take place for tourists and enthusiasts who come to learn about this important event in America’s history.
