The German Shepherd breed is also referred to as the Alsatian breed, they are a very strong and good looking dog.  They have a long body that is muscular and a long tail.  One of their most dominant and distinct features is their pointed, upright ears.  Their coat is long in length and can come in black with tan, sable or all black and also in blue, liver and white.  The white German Shepherd has began to develop its own name the American White Shepherd.  There are three types of German Shepherd breeds; rough coated, long rough coated and long haired.  This breed are known and do their best as working dogs, they are fearless, alert and happy.  It is their ability to learn and amazing intelligence that make them such a popular and workable breed.  They love to have their people around and should be socialized as puppies and throughout because they can be over protective of their owner and family.  It is important to firmly train this breed and as a result they perform well as a sheep dog, guard dog, in police work, as a guide for the blind, search and rescue and military work.  This breed does their best when doing strenuous work and activity that they love and they like to be challenged.  Developed in Germany the German Shepherd is a cross breed of various varieties of shepherd dogs from Wurtember, Thurginid and Bavaria.
