In 1907, the East Carolina University was founded in order to alleviate the shortages of teachers in the state of North Carolina. The University is part of the University of North Carolina system and the East Carolina University is located in Greenville, North Carolina. The school mascot at the East Carolina University became the pirates in 1934 but the official sideline Pirate was chosen in 1983. Elementary students in Pitt County named the Pirate, Pee Dee after the two rivers that flow threw North Carolina and South Carolina. The school colors are purple and gold and more specifically, old gold and royal purple. The school alma mater at the East Carolina University is “Hail to thy name so fair” which first appeared in the school’s handbook in the 1940-1941 version. A unique tradition that is carried out at each home football game is that Jimmy Hendrix’s Purple Haze is played as the football team takes the field.
