In 1924, as a memorial to his father Washington Duke, James Buchanan founded Duke University. The Duke family made their empire from the tobacco and electricity industry in the Carolina’s. In December 1924, the Duke family started the Duke endowment, which led to the Trinity College later becoming Duke University. Trinity College began in 1838 in Rudolph County and moved to Durham in 1892. Originally there was an east campus and a west campus. The east side was stately Georgian and the women’s college. The west side was the men’s and gothic in style. The men and women’s colleges merged in 1932. Both men and women either enroll in the Trinity College of Arts and Science or in the Pratt School of Engineering. The blue devils is the school mascot and is derived from a from a French force during World War II that was known as the blue devils and they were known for their courage and valor. Duke University adopted the Blue Devil school mascot in 1923. The school colors of Duke University are dark blue and white.
