Colgate University is loyal to the lucky number ‘13’ because 13 men, six clergymen and 7 laymen with $13 dollars and 13 prayers founded the University. In 1817, the 13 men met in the frontier settlement of Hamilton, New York. This meeting resulted in the founding of the Baptist Education Society with Hamilton, New York as the site. Years late, in 1823, Baptists from New York City including William Colgate joined with the Hamilton school and formed the Hamilton Literacy and Theological Institution and remained in Hamilton. The name changed yet again in 1846 to Madison University and finally became Colgate University in 1890. Colgate is an independent University that is very selective. There are about 2800 students at this coeducational liberal arts college. Colgate University was voted in the American top 25 “new Ivies” by Newsweek magazine. There are many rich traditions found at Colgate including the Torchlight Ceremony held at Taylor Lake, the “hello” tradition that required students to “do not fail to say ‘hello’ to everyone. Freshmen always speak first”. The school colors at Colgate University are Maroon and Gray and the school mascot is the Red Raiders.
