The Civil Air Patrol is the official civilian auxiliary of the United States Air force. The CAP began on December 1, 1941, just days before the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Civil Air Patrol played a large role and was very active in World War II; they were responsible for sinking two German U boats. After World War II it was decided that the Civil Air Patrol would never again be involved in direct combat and they were to be used only for munificent causes. Today the CAP no longer destroys submarines and they are a volunteer organization. The members of the Civil Air Patrol come from all backgrounds and races. There are four key elements and undertakings of the Civil Air Patrol they are; emergency services, aerospace education for youth and the general public, a cadet program and homeland security. The Civil Air Patrol was vital to the response in the attack on September 11th on the World Trade Center, they flew blood victims of the attack to care and they released the 1st aerial pictures of the World Trade Center aftermath.
