The Citadel was founded in 1842 as a state supported military college it is located in Charleston, South Carolina on the Ashley River. The Citadel’s campus has 27 buildings and it is surrounded by a 10-acre parade ground. Males and females can be admitted to the undergraduate Corp of Cadets. Every cadet participates in the ROTC program and they cannot be married and must live in the barracks with their respective company. The core values that are expected of the cadets at the Citadel are academics, duty, honor, morality, discipline and diversity. In 1899, Cadet Captain John W. Moore was the manager of the baseball team, he took the team off site for a game and they made pennant and banners for their team and decided on using the colors blue and white. The blue symbolized the clear blue sky and the unlimited horizons of their futures. The white symbolizes purity of thought and actions, honesty and decency, which are all elements of the Citadel code and honor code which embodies the “whole person” concept. The school mascot is a Bulldog because bulldogs have been related to the Marine Corps for many years. The Citadel has two live bulldog school mascots, General and Boo.
