The Chow breed is most well know for its blue-black tongue and almost straight hind legs.  Its coat is thick and furry and most commonly can come in solid red, black, blue, cinnamon and cream but also in tan, gray or white.  Every Chow has a ruff around their head, which gives them a lion-like appearance.  The Chow breed temperament is well behaved but can be bossy and independent.  The Chow is good with children but not with other dogs as they like to dominate.  The Chow must be over socialized as a puppy to help with their dominance issues.  The Chow temperament is a result of its past treatment.  Chows were used in China for guarding and pulling carts, their flesh was also eaten and still eaten as a delicacy in China today and their fur is sold in markets.  Many believe this breed can seem detached as a result of their past.  Chows are inactive outdoors and sensitive to heat although some exercise is good to keep them fit.  Breeders have tried to make them more family dogs instead of so independent.  The Chow has been around for thousands of years originating from China.  The name Chow-Chow is an English phrase that refers to things brought back from the Far East.  Today Chows are bred and kept as companion dogs.
