G.M. and Tina Lowenthal started their business originally as antique
reproduction distributors and had incredible success with duck decoys as part of
that business. However, as Mr. Lowenthal soon discovered, there are only so
many duck decoys one can hand paint. Eventually, the continual 3 a.m. painting
session got to be a little more than he could bear.
Originally, he imported moveable stuff bears from China and eventually began
designing his own. The company, which started out as a "mom and pop" industry
has grown by leaps and bounds. But Mr. Lowenthal explains: "We're a lot bigger
than when we were a 'mom and pop' shop, but, for better, or worse, we still run
it like a 'mom and pop' shop, only on steroids. We're still a little
disorganized and a little off-center, and slightly eccentric .. just like our
bears!"
