The Society of Jesus founded Boston College in 1863 with only 3 teachers and 22 students. For the first seven years at Boston College it was a liberal arts institution. Jesuits are active in all aspects of life, 45 are professors that teach undergraduate and graduate courses. Boston College was originally located in downtown Boston and after 50 years at that location the college was moved to a more rural location in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. Boston College was rebuilt on the Lawrence farm in 1903, the new Boston College opened in 1913 with prominent campus buildings such as St. Mary’s Hall, Devlin Hall and Bapst Library. Fr. Edward McLaughlin wanted a school mascot to represent Boston College; he suggested the eagle because it is a symbol of majesty, power and freedom. For many years, Boston College had a live eagle as their school mascot but after they had had a few birds that died and the species became endangered they decided to opt for a costume bird. The school colors at Boston College are Maroon and Gold. One of the live eagles that was the school mascot for Boston College was named Margo, which was taken from letters in the school colors.
