The Republic of Texas charted Baylor University in 1845 meanwhile being affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas. The Union Baptist Association founded the University as a suggestion from Reverend William Milton Tayorn and District Judge R.E.B. Baylor. Reverend James Huckins was the third founding father of Baylor University and participated in fundraising for the school. In the state of Texas, Baylor is the oldest institution of higher learning that is still continually operating and Baylor is the oldest Baptist University in the world. Baylor University is located off the banks of the Brazos River in Waco, Texas. At Baylor, there are about 14, 000 students that have a choice of 146 baccalaureate degrees, 73 Masters degrees and 22 different doctoral programs. In 2005, Baylor celebrated 160 proud years of being an institution of higher learning. The Founder’s Medal was established in September of 1969 and it is one of the most distinguished medals, there is even a copy on display at the Smithsonian museum in Washington D.C. This medal pictures R.E.B. Baylor, one of the founding father of Baylor University, on one side and Pat Neff Hall on the other side. The school mascot at Baylor University is the bear, which was chosen by the student body and the school colors are green and gold. Baylor has a school motto that is very important to the school; it is Pro Ecclesia, Pro Texana, which means for Church, for Texas.
