The Bassett Hound is a large breed that has a large head, its skin is folded and hangs loose, its coat is smooth and short and white with brown markings, these dogs also have very long, floppy ears.  There temperament is naturally well behaved, sweet, gentle and docile and they have an incredible sense of smell.  They are devoted dogs, which make them a perfect fit for family life.  A Bassett Hound acts lovingly towards children and to their owner and is more than willing to perform tricks for food.  With the proper training a Bassett Hound is a very obedient dog and known as a hunting dog.  When it comes to exercise it is good for Bassett Hounds to get some, but to not over stress their front legs through jumping, however running and playing is a must and very enjoyable for this breed.  The Bassett Hound name is derived from “bas”, French word for low.  It is said that Bassett Hounds originated from genetically dwarf dogs that came form litters of types of French hound dogs.  Shakespeare once wrote about Bassett Hounds that they have “ears which sweep away the morning dew”.  In 1863, the breed was first presented at the Paris Dog Show and its popularity spread throughout England.  Soon after the popularity spread through England the Bassett Hound’s popularity spread to America when the American Kennel Club recognized it in 1885.
